The world of cryptocurrency is no stranger to scams, but a new scheme targeting YouTube comment sections has emerged as one of the most cunning to date. Leveraging multi-signature wallets—typically seen as a beacon of security—this scam flips the script, preying on users’ greed and limited technical knowledge.
First reported by cybersecurity firm Kaspersky, the scam capitalizes on the allure of “free money,” leaving victims not only empty-handed but also questioning their actions.
How the YouTube Comment Scam Unfolds
The scam begins innocuously, with comments posted under finance-related YouTube videos. These comments often appear to be from inexperienced crypto users, saying things like:
“I have USDT stored in my wallet, and I have the seed phrase. How to transfer my funds to another wallet?”
To enhance the illusion, these comments include a complete seed phrase—seemingly a novice’s accidental overshare. When curious users input the seed phrase into their wallets, they discover a balance of approximately $8,000 in USDT (TRC20 tokens).
However, the catch is that transferring the funds requires a small amount of TRX (the native token of the TRON network) to cover gas fees. Believing they’ve struck gold, victims transfer TRX into the wallet to facilitate the withdrawal. At this moment, the scam springs into action.
The Role of Multi-Signature Wallets in the Scam
Unbeknownst to the victim, the wallet operates as a multi-signature wallet. Such wallets require multiple parties to approve outgoing transactions, which adds a layer of security in legitimate setups. However, in this scam, the setup is manipulated so the scammer retains control over all outgoing funds.
Once the victim deposits TRX for gas fees, the funds are instantly siphoned into the scammer’s wallet. The USDT remains inaccessible, leaving the victim with nothing but regret.
Kaspersky has called this a form of “ethical deception,” as it targets individuals attempting to exploit what they perceive as someone else’s carelessness.
How to Protect Yourself
As crypto scams become more intricate, following these tips can help safeguard your assets:
Never Use Shared Seed Phrases: If someone posts a seed phrase publicly, assume it’s a scam. No legitimate user would share this sensitive information.
Avoid Opportunistic Greed: Don’t attempt to profit from situations that seem too good to be true—chances are, they’re traps.
Understand Wallet Security: Educate yourself about multi-signature wallets and their risks to avoid falling for complex scams.
Be Cautious Online: Refrain from clicking on links in comment sections or messages from unverified sources.
Report Suspicious Activity: Flag fraudulent comments and accounts on platforms like YouTube to prevent others from being targeted.
A Warning to Crypto Enthusiasts
Kaspersky’s report on this scam highlights the risks of trying to exploit perceived vulnerabilities. While greed often drives victims to act, the best defense is to adhere to ethical practices and avoid engaging with unknown wallets.
As the crypto market continues to mature, users must stay vigilant against evolving threats. Platforms like YouTube and X are stepping up moderation, but scammers are quick to adapt, making user awareness a critical line of defense.
